Access to Sailing safety classes are an important part of our service to the community. Most boating accidents, injuries and drownings are preventable with basic safety training.
Duncan Milne, founder of Access to Sailing, personally teaches many ATS classes. Captain Duncan has been awarded the National Water Safety Congress Award of Merit for his work promoting water safety through Access to Sailing.
Many ATS safety classes focus on children, to make them aware of the risks inherent in water-related activities, and to teach them basic safety measures.
For people with disabilities and their assistants, ATS teaches:
Use of ramps and lifts for wheelchairs.
Assisted walks and carries.
Plus, how all boating safety issues specifically relate to disabled persons.
ATS has boating and water safety classes or people of all ages, whether disabled or able-bodied. Classes cover such subjects as:
Evaluating environmental conditions (sea state, wind, water temperature.)
Being informed about the experience of your captain and crew.
Types of boats.
Swimming ability.
Boarding vessels.
Use of a PFD (Personal Flotation Device).
Proper clothing for safe sailing.
Preparing for heat and cold conditions.
Prevention of boating related injuries (eg. awareness of blocks, clamps, lines and the boom. Moving on wet surfaces. Using lifelines.)
Awareness of boat handling characteristics. (eg. heeling, rocking. How lines and sails move during sailing maneuvers.)
Communication while on board.
Emergency procedures (eg., in cases someone falls in, boat sinking, injuries, heat and cold-related emergencies, etc.)
