Access to Sailing certification programs teach employees of aquatic-related businesses and government organizations how to effectively serve disabled persons. For example, ATS offers a training program for City employees supervising public use of municipal pool and beach facilities
There is great need for these kinds of trainings. The creation of progressive public access programs following the enactment of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 has enabled disabled persons, in increasing numbers, to engage in a wide variety of outdoor recreational activities. Over the past decade, participation in aquatic activities by persons with disabilities has risen by an astonishing five hundred percent! Yet reference to this expanding sector of the market remains little more than a footnote in most municipal and business training programs.
Employees need to be familiar with issues pertaining to special populations. Effective personnel training is essential to increase standards of safety and levels of courtesy, while decreasing the possibility of incidental injury and legal liability.
Here are some of the topics covered in ATS certification programs:
Familiarization with common types of disabilities
ADA requirements
Courtesy and sensitivity
Adaptive equipment
Assistive techniques
"What should I do if?"
Role playing
