Sailing to a
better future
Access to Sailing provides therapeutic rehabilitation to disabled and disadvantaged children and adults, through interactive sailing outings. Our participants face a wide variety of physical and mental challenges including spinal cord damage, stroke, head injury, chronic disease and developmental disabilities. Many have suffered a recent traumatic injury or illness. For over 14 years, ATS has served thousands of participants, mostly in small groups brought to us by hospital therapists, special education teachers and community program leaders.
Children and adults with disabilities often experience feelings of helplessness and depression, which inhibit their rehabilitation. ATS outings provide an empowering experience of life outside this cycle-- an experience of moving beyond limitations. Participants are given the opportunity to regain vital confidence and self-reliance |

by helping sail the boat, to the degree their disability allows. With the supervision of our highly experienced ATS staff, participants accomplish such tasks as adjusting lifejackets, raising and trimming sails, tying knots, and steering the boat. In this challenging yet supportive environment, participants often discover they are capable of far more than they had realized. Ultimately, the mission of Access to Sailing is empowering each participant to reintegrate in society and live a full, rewarding life as a productive member of the community.
Leadership by example. Access to Sailing is uniquely suited to fulfill this mission, because its founder Duncan Milne is a living example. Duncan, a paraplegic and world-class sailor, has captained many ATS outings. His friendly enthusiasm, bold leadership and refusal to be defeated by his paralysis make him a special inspiration to those with similar challenges. Duncans remarkable achievements with Access to Sailing have been regularly featured in the news media. He has also been the recipient of prestigious awards for his community service.
Continuing and expanding our commitment. Access to Sailing needs ongoing financial support to maintain current levels of service, and to expand our programs to keep pace with growing community needs.
